Wontumi's Aide Thomas Andy Owusu Convicted in Galamsey Fraud Case

Accra, Ghana - 04 June, 2025 - The High Court has convicted Thomas Andy Owusu, an aide to Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, of corruption.

Owusu was convicted on his plea after entering into a plea bargain with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in connection with a bribery scheme related to the issuance of mining permits.

The court sentenced Owusu to pay 500 penalty units, amounting to GH₵6,000, and ordered him to pay GH₵200,000 in restitution to the state. The charges against Owusu stemmed from a 2019 exposé by Tiger Eye PI, which implicated him and former presidential staffer Charles Bissue in a scheme to circumvent mining licensing procedures in exchange for bribes.

According to the facts of the case, Owusu allegedly paid GH₵15,000 to facilitate the unlawful issuance of mining permits.

As part of the plea agreement, Owusu's name was withdrawn from charges of corruption of a public officer and accepting bribes to influence a public officer.
