Wontumi TV Apologizes to Mahama and NDC Over Baseless Helicopter Crash Claims
Accra, Ghana – 13 August, 2025 – Wontumi TV has issued an unreserved apology to former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the general public for broadcasting unfounded allegations about the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The media outlet's presenter, Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, had suggested without evidence that President Mahama was involved in the tragedy, prompting widespread condemnation.
Wontumi TV has since distanced itself from the remarks, stating they "do not in any way represent the views, position, or policy of Wontumi TV" and were "inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our station’s values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting". The station has taken disciplinary action against the presenter and reinforced editorial guidelines to ensure all on-air content is based on verified facts and credible information.
The media outlet expressed regret for any distress or harm caused to former President Mahama and the NDC, and assured the public that it would take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The controversy began when Wontumi TV made claims suggesting that the helicopter crash was linked to certain political motives or conspiracies. These claims were widely circulated on social media and sparked outrage among the NDC supporters and the general public.
The NDC has welcomed the apology and retraction, emphasizing the importance of media accountability and responsibility. The party has also called for greater scrutiny of media outlets to prevent the spread of misinformation.
