Wontumi Released from EOCO Detention After Meeting Bail Conditions

Accra, Ghana - 02 June, 2025 - The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail conditions.
Wontumi's legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, had been working to secure his release since he was granted bail on May 28 with two justified sureties.
The release comes after Wontumi's lawyers withdrew a motion seeking a review of the GH¢50 million bail condition, which had been pending at the High Court in Accra. The motion was slated for hearing on June 3 but was withdrawn on June 2, paving the way for his release.
According to NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua, Wontumi was released on Monday evening after nearly a week in detention.
Kodua thanked Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for his support in securing Wontumi's release.
“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released, he’s gone home to relax, we will inform you of any new development. Let’s thank Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi for the support,” he told NPP supporters gathered at the EOCO office on Monday evening.
Wontumi's release is conditional on his cooperation with ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
The investigation, led by EOCO, has both domestic and international components, with the office working with international law enforcement partners to recover assets suspected to be linked to criminal activity.
