Wontumi Challenges EOCO's GHS 50m Bail Condition in High Court, Hearing Set for June 3

Accra, Ghana - 31 May, 2025 - Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken his case to the High Court in Accra, requesting a review of the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Wontumi's lawyers, Marfo & Associates, argue that the GHS 50 million bail bond is unreasonably high and intended to keep him detained.

A court hearing is set for June 3, 2025, to consider Wontumi's plea for more lenient bail terms.

In a related development, top officials of the NPP, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were denied access to Wontumi during a visit to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra.

Despite being granted permission to enter the premises, the party leaders were unable to meet with Wontumi, who is being held as part of an ongoing investigation by EOCO. Wontumi's detention and the stringent bail conditions have sparked concerns about the treatment of high-profile individuals in the country's justice system.
