Accra, Ghana - 14 May, 2025 - The lawyer for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, former head of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has cautioned that his client may be forced to disclose sensitive national security information as part of his defense in an ongoing court case.

Samuel Atta Akyea made this warning outside the courtroom on Tuesday, May 13, emphasizing the need for caution in handling the case.

Adu-Boahene is facing charges including stealing, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Atta Akyea explained that if pushed to fully defend himself, his client might have to reveal classified information, potentially compromising national security.

Despite a court order for a seven-working-day remand having elapsed, Adu-Boahene remains in custody. His lawyer informed the court that his client was rearrested on a separate matter after the original remand period ended, leading to his continued detention.

“The way national security matters are being raised, he should come to terms with it. That is what he was trying to do. He was not saying that he is afraid to defend himself by saying that they are pushing him into areas of national security, and when push comes to shove, he has to defend himself.

“Later, someone will ask why a national intelligence officer is trying to bring national security matters into the public domain when he has sworn an oath,” Atta Kyea added.
