Accra, Ghana - 20 Jan, 2025 - Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza has revealed that the Akufo-Addo government has left behind a staggering GH¢113 billion in commitments, with GH¢20 billion of that consisting of unpaid certificates.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee, Agbodza revealed that the interest on this debt has ballooned to GH¢665 million, largely due to the nature of the contracts associated with the debt. This substantial burden on the state's finances poses a significant challenge for the incoming administration.

Agbodza emphasized the urgent need to address these unpaid certificates and high interest rates to prevent further fiscal challenges for the country. Ghana's debt situation has raised concerns about the country's ability to meet its debt obligations, with some experts calling for a debt renegotiation programme.

“At the transition committee as of today, the NPP government is leaving a minimum of GH¢113 billion commitments. What we should be worried about though is that in that same document, they are saying that certificate unpaid as of today from the Government of Ghana amounts to about 20 billion and more worrying is that the interest on this GH¢113 is GH¢665m due to the nature of the contracts,'' he stated.
