Govt will need GH₵345m to Implement Free Tertiary Tuition Policy - Haruna Iddrisu
Haruna Iddrisu is Education Minister-Designate

Accra, Ghana - 20 Jan, 2025 -  The government of Ghana will need an estimated ₵345 million to implement the proposed free tuition policy for first-year tertiary students, according to Minister-Designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee in Parliament on January 20, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu noted that the policy, set to be introduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is a significant step towards easing the financial burden on students and their families, while promoting greater access to higher education.

According to him, the NDC government plans to channel the funds directly to the affected universities, with provisions made to reimburse students who have already paid their tuition fees. Parents who are willing to pay fees will also be allowed to do so under the new framework, offering flexibility and choice.

“The country will require about ₵345 million of the population of students who enter tertiary institutions that is what the state will be required to do. We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least, to make refunds to those who have already paid fees,” he stated.

“The beauty of this is that parents who are willing to pay can do so under this policy that has been introduced by the NDC,” he stated.
