Education Minister Inaugurates UG Governing Council, Unveils GHC50m Research Fund

Accra, Ghana - 25 April, 2025 - Ghana's Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has sworn in a new Governing Council for the University of Ghana, tasking the 18-member body, led by Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, to drive educational and infrastructure development at the institution.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra on Friday, April 25, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that the government plans to operationalize the National Research Fund to support universities in conducting research that will spur the country's growth and development.

The Minister disclosed that an amount of GHC50 million has been allocated to kick-start the National Research Fund, a move that is expected to boost research activities in Ghana's universities.

He also emphasized the need for the university to leverage public-private partnerships to expand its infrastructure, both academic and residential, to accommodate a growing student population.

“The president has asked me to convince you that this year, he intends to operationalise the National Research Fund, and accordingly, an amount of GHC50 million has been allocated for the take-off of the National Research Fund.

“And then also your affiliate institutions, but more importantly, again, that today the university must sail through an appropriate, legitimate public-private partnership to expand your infrastructure both academic and residential in order that you can go and improve the student population,” he said.

The Minister's announcement comes as a welcome development for the University of Ghana, which has been striving to improve its research capabilities and infrastructure in recent years. The new Governing Council has been tasked with the responsibility of charting a new course for the University, and it is expected that they will work closely with the government to achieve these goals.

The University of Ghana is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in West Africa, and the inauguration of the new Governing Council is seen as a significant step towards realizing its vision of becoming a world-class university.
