We will not hand power to NDC, not today, not tomorrow - Bryan Acheampong
Ghana's Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has sparked controversy by declaring that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not relinquish power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Acheampong's remarks, made during the NPP's "Final Walk" rally in Abetifi on Nov 23, have been met with widespread criticism from the opposition and civil society groups. The NDC has accused Acheampong of undermining the country's democratic principles and inciting violence.
Despite the backlash, Acheampong remains defiant, assuring supporters that the NPP will reclaim all parliamentary seats lost to the NDC in the 2020 elections. His comments have raised concerns about the potential for electoral violence and the need for the electoral commission to ensure a free and fair process.
“Anytime I vote, I do that to encourage the party and the party is on its feet now. As I stated in Mpraeso, I am saying again that we will win, we won’t give the power to them [NDC], not today, nor tomorrow.
“We will win the elections so as you are leaving here, be encouraged and brave to work for the party, and have hope that you have a party that will support you if it comes to power,'' he stated.
The NPP has a history of competitive elections, and Acheampong's remarks are seen as a rallying cry for party supporters. However, the opposition NDC has vowed to contest the elections vigorously, setting the stage for a highly competitive and potentially contentious electoral process.
As Ghana prepares for its general elections, the international community is watching closely to ensure that the process is peaceful, free, and fair. The country's electoral commission has assured citizens that it is committed to delivering a credible election, but Acheampong's comments have raised concerns about the potential for violence and instability.
