'We Never Collected Betting Tax' - Amin Adam Rejects Claims in 2025 Budget Statement

Accra, Ghana - 11 March, 2025 - Ghana's Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has sparked controversy after denying claims that his administration implemented the contentious betting tax, insisting that it was never enforced during his tenure.
Speaking during a press conference on March 11, 2025, Adam described the claim that the tax was abolished as "unconscionable" and accused the current government of deceiving the public.
The betting tax, which imposed a 10% withholding tax on winnings from sports betting and lottery, faced heavy backlash from industry players and the public. While the current government has abolished the tax, Dr. Amin Adam maintains that his administration did not implement the policy before leaving office.
“Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected Betting Tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented, is to deceive the people of Ghana,'' he stated.
Dr. Amin Adam's comments come after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the abolition of several taxes, including the Betting Tax and E-Levy, in the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on the floor of Parliament on March 11, 2025.
The betting tax was a contentious issue during the 2024 general elections, with then-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promising to abolish it if elected.
The NPP had also included the abolition of the tax in its manifesto.
