We Have Enough Evidence to Bring Akonta Mining Perpetrators to Justice - Minerals Commission tells AG

Accra, Ghana - 22 April, 2025 - Ghana's Minerals Commission has gathered conclusive evidence of illegal mining activities by Akonta Mining Limited within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, despite the company's repeated denials according to the commission's Chief Executive Officer, Isaac Andrew Tandoh.
Tandoh revealed on the Citi Breakfast Show that verified intelligence, including geolocation data and video evidence, directly links Akonta Mining to operations within protected forest zones.
Tandoh stated that the evidence is sufficient to prosecute the perpetrators and has advised the Attorney General to take action. The Commission's findings contradict Akonta Mining's claims that it has never conducted unlawful operations within any forest reserve.
He dismissed the company's rebuttal as a public relations tactic, emphasizing that enforcement efforts will continue.
“For the intelligence we have now, the conditions and the videos we have now are more than enough to go after the perpetrators. The AG has been advised to pick up these conversations and make sure that the powers that are behind these perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.
“People can write letters and issue rebuttals in the newspapers; that is not something I will bother my head with, that will trouble me. This is just the beginning. We’ll allow the Attorney General to take over and ensure that the masterminds behind these illicit operations are dealt with in a way that deters others,” he stated.
