We can't guarantee safety of EC officials for Dome Kwabenya election rerun- NDC

Dome Kwabenya, Ghana - December 30, 2024 - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently opposed the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to hold a rerun election at the Abokobi Women's Development Centre in the Dome Kwabenya constituency.

Anthony Nukpenu, the Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the NDC, has expressed grave concerns about the safety of electoral officers, citing the community's resolve to resist the rerun.

According to Nukpenu, the community has made it clear that they will not participate in the rerun, having already voted overwhelmingly for Elikplim Akurugu on December 7.

In an interview with Chanel One news, he warned that any attempts to use police or military force to intimidate the people of Abokobi would be met with resistance.

“For us, we have not taken any decision but if they should go ahead, I can’t guarantee their safety. I can’t guarantee the safety of the electoral officers that will be deployed to conduct that single polling station because the community has indicated clearly to your reporter that should they dare, they have voted.

“They voted on the 7th, they voted overwhelmingly for Elikplim Akurugu. That result stands. Should any official dare come with a ballot box, ballot papers to determine another verdict, they are not going to participate but they can’t guarantee the safety of those who will come and conduct that exercise.''

“Nobody should think they are going to use the police or the military to intimidate the people of Abokobi. They will rise to the occasion and what people want to see, they will see it,” he added.
