Accra, Ghana - 30 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Ministry of Roads and Highways has initiated a validation process to determine the government's actual debt to road contractors.

In an engagement with road contractors earlier this week, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, announced that this move aims to verify the outstanding amount.

To facilitate this process, officials from various departments, including the Ministry, Department of Urban Roads, and Ghana Highways Authority, have been instructed to provide data on all Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) in the system.

The move is part of broader efforts to address the financial challenges facing the road sector. Discussions have also been held on optimizing the allocation and utilization of the Road Fund, ensuring debt sustainability, and making efficient use of scarce resources.

Additionally, negotiations are underway on the payment of interest on delayed payments to contractors. There are also plans to re-introduce road tolls to generate more revenue for road projects.

The validation process is expected to provide clarity on the government's debt obligations and pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient road sector.
