University Senior Staff Suspends Strike Following Government Response
George Ansong is the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG)

Accra, Ghana - 23 May. 2025 - The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has ended its national strike after the government took steps to meet its demands for implementing a negotiated agreement.

The SSA-UoG, along with its partners, the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), had initiated the strike on May 21, 2025, to press for the implementation of a long-overdue agreement.

The unions' decision to stand down comes after the Ministry of Finance issued a letter on May 22, 2025, authorizing the rollout of the agreement, which was negotiated six months prior with an effective date of November 2024. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has subsequently directed universities to commence payments to staff without delay.

Expressing appreciation for the government's move, the unions, in a statement, thanked Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu and GTEC Director-General Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their roles in finding a resolution.
