University of Ghana to Benefit from $10m Korean Grant for ICT Centre

Accra, Ghana - 20 June, 2025 - Ghana and South Korea have strengthened their bilateral ties with the groundbreaking ceremony for a $10 million ICT Centre at the University of Ghana. The Korea-funded centre, expected to be completed by 2026, will serve as a hub for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, supporting Ghana's digital economy and nurturing homegrown tech enterprises.

The Ghana-Korea Centre of Excellence for ICT-Based Startups and Research is a testament to the growing partnership between the two nations.

According to Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, the project represents a landmark investment and a symbol of deepening bilateral relations.

He noted that the grant is the largest ever from the Republic of Korea to Ghana, demonstrating the strong fraternity between the two countries.

“I am told that this is the largest grant ever from the Republic of Korea to Ghana, and this is a demonstration of the true fraternity and ever-deepening relations between the two countries,” he said.

Korean Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Park Kyongsig, expressed optimism about the centre's long-term impact on Ghana's startup landscape.

The centre will comprise an ICT hub and an incubation centre for startups, providing support and resources to help them grow. The ambassador hopes that one of these startups will become a leading company not only in Ghana but globally.

“This project has two pillars. One is the ICT centre. We will also have an incubation centre for the startups. We will support them, and maybe one of these startups will be a leading company not only in Ghana but in the world. We have high expectations,” he noted.

The project aligns with Ghana's efforts to expand its digital economy and promote innovation. The University of Ghana has allocated land for the centre, which is expected to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and technological advancement.
