Accra, Ghana - 20 June, 2025 - Ghana has successfully evacuated its citizens from Iran to Turkey amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The operation, led by the government, prioritizes the safety and well-being of Ghanaians caught in the conflict zone.

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed in a facebook post that the first batch of Ghanaians has been safely evacuated to Turkey.

According to him, plans are underway to evacuate Ghanaians from Israel shortly, with diplomatic efforts ongoing to secure border access approvals and ensure safe passage.

"So far, the first batch of Ghanaians in Iran has been evacuated to Turkey successfully. Our fellow nationals living in Israel will be evacuated shortly," he said.

The evacuation follows heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, prompting Ghana to initiate emergency measures to protect its citizens. Ghana's embassy in Tehran has been closed, while operations at the embassy in Tel Aviv have been scaled down to essential levels.

Ablakwa also met with Israeli Ambassador Roey Gilad and Iranian Ambassador Ali Ghomshi to discuss evacuation strategies and reinforce Ghana's diplomatic stance.

He emphasized Ghana's commitment to non-alignment and pacifism, urging both countries to pursue peaceful diplomatic solutions.

The minister also addressed recent comments by the Israeli Ambassador questioning Ghana's voting record at international organizations. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana's sovereign right to make independent decisions based on its foreign policy principles, enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

Ghana currently holds a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council and chairs the governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, underscoring its commitment to global peace and cooperation.
