Unity in Grief: Former President Kufuor Pays Condolence Visit to Mahama After Tragic Helicopter Crash
Accra, Ghana – 8 August, 2025 - Former President John Agyekum Kufuor paid a solemn visit to President John Dramani Mahama at his residence to offer condolences over the tragic helicopter crash that resulted in the loss of eight lives. The crash claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers, three high-ranking officials, and three members of the Ghana Armed Forces who were en route to Obuasi to attend an event on August 6, 2025.
The visit was attended by key government officials, including Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and First Lady Lordina Mahama.Former President Kufuor's gesture of solidarity and statesmanship was appreciated by the government and the people of Ghana during this difficult time.
In a media interview, Former President Kufuor reflected on the hazards of public service, recalling his own close call with a plane accident in 2007 while on a presidential trip from Libya to Khartoum in Sudan. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and called for support for the incumbent president during this challenging moment.
President Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honor of the victims. Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has been appointed as the acting Defence Minister, and the Lands and Natural Resources Minister will serve as the acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
