UCC Staff Threaten Mass Protest Over GTEC's Sanctions , 48-Hour Ultimatum Issued

Cape Coast,Ghana – September 23,2025 - The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw its recent sanctions against the university. The sanctions, which include suspending all government-related support and services to UCC and labeling the institution as "non-existent" on its official portal, have been condemned by UTAG-UCC as "unlawful" and "unjustifiable".

GTEC imposed the sanctions due to UCC's alleged failure to comply with directives concerning the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong. However, UTAG-UCC Secretary Dr. Isaac Boabeng argues that the sanctions are a direct attack on the dignity and livelihoods of university staff.

Dr. Boabeng has demanded that GTEC withdraw the directive and offer a formal apology by Thursday or Friday. Failure to comply will result in mass protests, with staff unions planning to march to Accra. "If GTEC fails to act, we will march to Accra. They should come and lock the University of Cape Coast and take the keys to Accra. GTEC and Professor Okloh must understand that there are laws in this country," Dr. Boabeng stated.

The sanctions have raised concerns about the potential impact on staff salaries and the overall stability of the university. Dr. Boabeng described the withdrawal of government support, particularly regarding salary payments, as "reckless" and "criminal". "Salaries are not privileges that someone can whimsically say, 'I have withdrawn.' It is unacceptable to deny university staff what is due to them unjustifiably and unlawfully," he emphasized.

If GTEC fails to comply with UTAG-UCC's demands, the university's staff unions are prepared to take collective action. The potential for a large-scale protest looms, with many staff and students standing in solidarity with UTAG-UCC.
