Two Chinese Nationals and Two Ghanaians Arrested for Illegal Mining in Tano-Anwia Forest Reserve

Aowin, Western Region, Ghana - 20 March, 2025 - A joint operation by Ghana's Forestry Commission's Rapid Response Team and the Police has resulted in the arrest of four individuals, including two Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians, for engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano-Anwia Forest Reserve.

Located in the Aowin Municipality of the Western Region, the reserve is a protected area, and mining activities are strictly prohibited. However, recent news reports exposed the ongoing illegal mining, prompting authorities to take action.

The operation, which was carried out on Thursday March 20, resulted in the seizure of two excavators and a pickup vehicle. The arrests and seizures are part of Ghana's efforts to crack down on illegal mining, which has been a persistent problem in the country.

Ghana's forests are facing significant threats from illegal mining, with estimates suggesting that over 30% of the country's forest cover has been lost in recent years. The government has pledged to take action to protect the country's natural resources and prevent environmental degradation.

The Forestry Commission's Rapid Response Team has been working to combat illegal mining and logging in Ghana's forests. The team has been conducting regular patrols and operations to arrest and prosecute individuals engaged in these activities.

The arrests and seizures are a significant step forward in Ghana's efforts to protect its forests and natural resources.
