Pra River Pollution Sparks Water Shortage in Cape Coast, Elmina

Cape Coast, Ghana - The Central regional branch of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has issued an urgent notice warning of severe water supply challenges in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities due to illegal mining activities (galamsey), polluting the Pra River.

The pollution has significantly impacted the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, forcing GWL to scramble for alternative solutions to mitigate the crisis.

According to GWL, about sixty percent of the catchment capacity is silted as a result of galamsey, compromising the quality of raw water.

The pollution from galamsey activities has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of water supply in the region.

Authorities have vowed to crack down on illegal mining operations in the area, emphasizing the need to protect Ghana's water resources.

The water crisis has sparked fears about the potential health implications for residents, who are urged to take precautions to ensure their safety.
