The Impact of Hit Left Me Visibly Shaken and Short of Breath - Afenyo-Markin Slams Police Officer's Actions

Accra, Ghana- 06 May, 2025 - Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned an alleged unprovoked act of violence by a police officer during the "Save the Judiciary" demonstration at the Parliament House on Monday, May 5.

Afenyo-Markin in a statement, alleged that Constable Forson forcefully hit him on the chest, causing him to become 'visibly shaken and short of breath'.

According to the Minority Leader, he was assisted by senior police officers and colleagues, who provided water and helped him stabilize before he continued with the petition presentation.

He added that he intends to petition the Inspector-General of Police for a full investigation and has criticized attempts to deflect attention from the demonstration's core concerns about the judiciary's independence.

“What makes this assault particularly egregious is that the officer was being openly reprimanded by his superiors and fellow officers at the time, yet he defiantly responded that he didn’t care who I was,” he said.

“We must not be distracted from the purpose of the demonstration. We marched to defend the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary—principles that must be protected at all costs,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has invited Afenyo-Markin for investigation into the incident.
