Tamale Central Constituency to Hold By-Election on September 30, 2025

Tamale,Ghana ,August 19,2025 - The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced that a by-election will be held on September 30, 2025, to fill the vacant parliamentary seat in the Tamale Central Constituency. The seat became vacant following the death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, who was among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not contest the by-election, citing respect for the late MP and a desire to avoid heightening political tensions during a period of national mourning. This decision leaves the National Democratic Congress (NDC) unopposed in the contest.

The EC in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, the EC said nominations from potential candidates will be received at its Tamale Metropolitan Office from Monday, September 8, 2025, to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., as well as 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.

Nomination forms will be available for download from the Commission’s website, www.ec.gov.gh, from August 19, 2025, until September 10, 2025.

The EC also emphasized in its statement that prospective candidates may personally submit their completed forms or have them delivered by their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the Tamale Metropolitan Office during the stipulated period.
