Election 2024: Denmark Ambassador warns against vigilantism, calls for peaceful and credible elections
With Ghana's general elections just two days away, Denmark Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring, has called on all political parties to ensure a peaceful and violence-free process.
In an interview with Lead News' Florence Kyei on December 3, Ambassador Norring emphasized the importance of political leaders living up to their commitments to peaceful elections.
He urged them to take concrete steps to prevent their supporters from engaging in violence.
The Ambassador also commended the National Peace Council for its efforts to combat political vigilantism. He expressed hope that the elections would not be marred by violence, which would be a first in Ghana's democratic history.
According to him, Ghana has a history of peaceful elections, but there are concerns about the potential for violence, particularly from political vigilante groups. These groups have been known to be supported by supporters of the political parties.
He added that the international community is closely watching the elections and that the political parties should do whatever they can within their leadership to avoid any groups or supporters making use of violence.
''We are following closely {elections}, We have followed for a long time. We are very clear in our message. We hope that all political parties will live up to their commitments to ensure that these elections are peaceful and credible. That they will do whatever they can within the political leadership to avoid any groups or supporters making use of violence,'' he stated.
''We strongly support the National Peace Council and their work against political vigilantism. We hope that will not take place. I don't think the Political leaders are themselves instigating but unfortunately they're, we know, the vigilantism groups are they supported by supporters of the political parties. We hope they show respect and avoid making this the first violence in Ghana's democratic history,'' he added.
Ambassador Norring's comments reflect the global concern for peaceful and democratic polls in Ghana.
