Supreme Court to Determine Legitimacy of Injunction Against Akwatia MP Today

Accra, Ghana - 12 March, 2025 - Ghana's Supreme Court is set to deliver a verdict today March 12, 2025, regarding the legitimacy of an injunction against Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who has been convicted of contempt.
The injunction, handed down by a Koforidua High Court, prohibits Mr. Kumi from assuming his parliamentary duties until he purges himself of contempt.
However, the MP's lawyers argue that the High Court judge erred in assuming jurisdiction over the parliamentary election petition without the Electoral Commission's gazette notification.
Mr. Kumi's lawyers also contend that the High Court judge breached natural justice rules by hearing the contempt application despite the pendency of their motion to set aside the ruling.
They also claim the judge was biased and prejudiced against the MP.
