Accra, Ghana - 12 March, 2025 - Ghana's Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has disputed claims by his predecessor, Mohammed Amin Adam, that the previous government never enforced the betting tax.

The controversy surrounds the tax's implementation and abolition, with Mr. Adam accusing the current government of deceiving Ghanaians by claiming to abolish a tax that was never collected.

However, in an interview on JoyNews' PM Express on Tuesday night, Minister Forson countered that his checks revealed the tax was implemented in the second half of 2024, with the government collecting over GH₵80 million from betting tax to date.

He insisted that the facts on the ground do not support Mr. Adam's assertion, clearly stating that the betting tax was indeed implemented.

"I don’t think he’s on top of that matter because my checks revealed that it was implemented in the second half of 2024. And my checks also reveal that year-to-date, the government of Ghana has collected over GH₵80 million from betting tax, so I don’t know what he’s talking about. It is not the fact. The fact on the ground does not support his assertion. Clearly, the betting tax was implemented,'' Ato forson stated.

The betting tax, introduced under the previous government, imposed a 10% withholding tax on winnings from sports betting and lottery. Despite facing heavy backlash from industry players and the public, the tax remained in place until its recent abolition.

In a related development, former President John Dramani Mahama's government has fulfilled its campaign promise to abolish the e-levy and betting tax. The move is expected to have significant implications for Ghana's economy and the gaming industry.
