Sky Train Saga: Ameyaw-Akumfi's Lawyers Seek to Halt Trial
Accra, Ghana - 24 June, 2025 - The High Court in Ghana has adjourned a ruling on a motion filed by lawyers for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), in the ongoing Sky Train saga trial.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, along with former CEO Solomon Asamoah, is facing charges of causing financial loss to the state and willful dissipation of public funds related to the controversial deal.
The defence team is seeking to strike out the charges, arguing they are premature, and to refer a constitutional question to the Supreme Court. Specifically, they want the apex court to determine whether certain sections of the Public Property Protection Law (SMCD 140) align with Article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair trial.
The sections in question pertain to penalties for intentional dissipation and misuse of public funds, as well as liability for directors and officers in cases of corporate offences. The defence is requesting a stay of proceedings until the Supreme Court rules on the constitutional questions.
Meanwhile, the prosecution has revised its witness list, withdrawing four witness statements and opting to rely on eight witnesses for its case. The High Court will deliver its ruling on the defence's motion on July 9.
