SECO Injects $77m into Ghana's Economy to Promote Sustainable Growth

Accra, Ghana - 10 June, 2025 - In a significant boost to Ghana's economic development, the Swiss government has announced a $77 million grant as part of a four-year cooperation program aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth and inclusive development.
The program, which is being implemented by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), will focus on three strategic pillars: improving local governance and decentralization, supporting the private sector to create jobs and increase income opportunities, and enhancing environmental integrity.
The new program aligns with Ghana's development priorities, as identified in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and key sector ministries. It also places a strong emphasis on gender equality, climate action, and good economic governance.
According to Ambassador Simone Giger, Switzerland's Ambassador to Ghana, the program is a testament to Switzerland's long-standing commitment to Ghana's development.
"We believe that Ghana's economy and trade should be more diversified," Ambassador Giger said at the launch of the program. "I would be super happy if one day I could go to a Swiss market and buy clothes made in Ghana, handcrafts made in Ghana, or even chocolate made in Ghana." The ambassador emphasized the need to move beyond traditional exports and encouraged investment in new, globally competitive sectors.
The program is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana's economy, creating jobs and increasing income opportunities for citizens.
According to David Marcos, Project Manager of the "Productivity Ecosystems for Decent Work" initiative at the International Labour Organization (ILO), the program will focus on improving productivity and working conditions in factories, particularly in the agro-processing industry.
"Our aim is to enhance economic cooperation by promoting efficiency and decent work environments, especially in agro-processing industries that can create jobs and build value chains within Ghana," Marcos said.
