Sammy Crabbe Blames NPP's Internal Weaknesses for 2024 Election Loss
Accra, Ghana - 16 Jan, 2025 - A former senior member of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) has spoken out about the party's internal struggles, which he believes contributed to its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Sammy Crabbe, a former vice chairman of the NPP, told Eyewitness News on Citi FM that the party's weakened internal structure and lack of cohesion led to widespread disillusionment among its members.
Mr Crabbe also criticised the perceived disconnect between party leaders and ordinary members, citing the lavish lifestyles of some leaders as a source of frustration.
“If somebody does not believe that whatever the party gains in government will benefit him or her, there is no way they will wake up in the morning and go and sacrifice. They must believe that there is something in it for them.
“You cannot just keep kicking the can down the road, thinking it’s going to be okay. That is not going to work,” he stated.
The NPP's defeat in the 2024 elections was a significant blow to the party, which lost both the presidential race and a substantial number of parliamentary seats to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party now holds just 88 seats in parliament, down from its previous total. The NPP's leadership has faced intense scrutiny in the aftermath of the election, with many calling for reforms to address the party's internal weaknesses.
