'Rename Tamale Airport to Gbewaa International Airport' - Dagbon Overlord tells Mahama

Yendi, Nothern Region, Ghana - 22 March, 2025 - The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the renaming of the Tamale International Airport.
The airport was recently renamed Yakubu Tali International Airport, a decision taken without the traditional leader's endorsement.
Speaking through his representative, Zangbalin Lana, Dr. Yakubu Mahama, during the President's thank-you tour of the Northern Region, Yaa Naa Abukari II proposed an alternative name - Gbewaa International Airport. This request is part of a broader call for development initiatives in the region.
The traditional leader emphasized the need to complete Phase Three of the Tamale International Airport project, which has stalled since the completion of Phase Two. This final phase is crucial in elevating the facility to a world-class standard, with the construction of a high terminal.
“We want to entreat you to start Phase Three of the project so that the airport can handle all that it was intended to do, including ensuring the humane handling of our citizens. Such a huge investment must be appreciated by the people it serves. In consultation with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Naa, we want the airport to be renamed Gbewaa International Airport.''
