Raid on Ofori-Atta's Home was Unconstitutional and Unlawful - Afenyo-Markin

Accra, Ghana - 12 Feb, 2025 - A raid on the residence of Ghana's former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with opposition lawmakers condemning the action as unlawful and unconstitutional.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has denounced the raid, arguing that it was carried out without any legal basis and violated Ofori-Atta's fundamental human rights. He has called for a full investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.

“There was no such law supporting the actions. The contention here was that the man’s home was raided unlawfully. That conduct was unconstitutional…we’re not sending the right signals to the electorates,” he argued.

In contrast, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has cautioned against politicizing the issue, advising that Ofori-Atta should seek redress in court rather than relying on parliamentary intervention.

“You go to court for the court to declare that your property and dignity has been violated. In court the two sides will be there…” he stated.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has denied any involvement in the raid, with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng suggesting that the incident may have been staged to discredit his office and derail ongoing investigations into Ofori-Atta.

However, the emergence of CCTV footage allegedly identifying the leader of the group responsible for the raid has raised further questions about the identity and motivations of those behind the operation.

The individual in question is a well-known businessman and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
