Prof. Beyuo slams Akufo-Addo Administration Over Healthcare Worker Exodus
Accra, Ghana - Nov 14, 2024 - The Akufo-Addo administration is under fire for its handling of the healthcare sector, particularly regarding the alarming rate of medical professionals fleeing the country. Prof. Titus Beyuo, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Lambussie, has voiced sharp criticism over the government's poor management of the health sector and inadequate compensation for healthcare workers.
In an interview on Channel One TV, Prof. Beyou stated tahateExperienced specialists, consultants, and highly qualified staff are among those departing, citing loss of confidence in Ghana's economic future.
According to him, this brain drain has worsened under the current government, with professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.
Restoring Hope and Talent
Prof. Beyuo remains optimistic that a change in government in the 2024 elections could restore hope and retain medical talent.
He added that the NDC has pledged to introduce policies strengthening the economy and providing incentives for doctors and nurses to stay.
He further assured that the NDC is committed to introducing policies that will strengthen the economy and provide sufficient incentives for doctors and nurses to remain and work in Ghana.
“Brain drain has become worse under this government and has taken a different dimension. And our government in waiting [NDC] is mindful of this because if you check, Brian Drain earlier was in pursuit of higher academic qualifications, and people wanted to go and specialise.
“Currently, the people exiting this country as health workers, are the most experienced specialists, consultants with higher levels, and very qualified staff. The reason is this, people have lost hope in this country.
“There’s a case of hopelessness and despondency, I’m telling you that a change in government alone will restore some confidence in people who will want to stay. A change in government from NPP to NDC alone will restore some confidence in our economy and will lead to people wanting to stay.
“Our government intend to introduce an ethical migration policy where people who will leave for these countries will have a planning system with our partner countries and the World Health Organisation and the country will be compensated for these people leaving.
“We also have a motivation package for our nurses and doctors. We’re promising equitable distribution of health workers across the country.”
