Private Sector Will Lead 24-Hour Economy, Govt to Facilitate - Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 2 July, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has outlined his government's vision for the country's 24-Hour Economy policy, emphasizing the crucial role of the private sector in driving the initiative.

Speaking at the launch of the programme in Accra, President Mahama stressed that his administration will take a facilitative rather than dominant role in the rollout.

According to President Mahama, the government will act as an enabler, creating an environment conducive to private enterprise growth within the framework of the 24-Hour Plus Programme. "The private sector will lead the 24-Hour Plus programme. Government will facilitate and not dominate," he stated.

The President explained that public funding for the initiative will be strategic and catalytic in nature, serving as seed funding for the 24-hour plus authority and supporting bulk infrastructure. This approach. he noted, is intended to unlock larger pools of financing and reduce the fiscal burden on the state.

“Any government funding in 24-hour plus will be catalytic, serving as seed funding for the 24-hour plus authority and support bulk infrastructure,” he noted.

Enterprise-level financing, President Mahama noted, will be sourced through commercial banks, development finance institutions, and blended finance instruments. This will ensure that the programme remains commercially viable and attractive to investors.

By adopting this approach, the government aims to create a sustainable and thriving 24-Hour Economy that benefits from private sector expertise and investment. The programme is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana's economic development, increasing productivity and creating new opportunities for businesses and citizens alike.
