Ghana Commodity Exchange Gets New Governing Board

Accra, Ghana – 12 August, 2025 – The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) has been inaugurated with a new Governing Board, tasked with the responsibility of deepening market access for farmers and boosting international trade. The Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko-Ampem, charged the board to prioritize good governance, transparency, and accountability in their operations.

The seven-member board is chaired by Nana Boadi Amponim Obadade III, with Ms. Evelyn Abaka serving as the Chief Executive Officer. Other members include:
- Ms. Abena Buachiwaa Brigidi, Member
- Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, MP, Member
- Mr. Anthony Gyampo, Member
- Mr. Bismark Tawiah Boateng, Member
- Mr. Joseph Kwashie Gidisu, Member

Mandate and Objectives
The GCX aims to provide a structured marketplace for agricultural commodities, improving price discovery, reducing post-harvest losses, and enhancing farmer incomes. The exchange's growth agenda focuses on increasing traded volumes, diversifying product offerings, and positioning Ghana as a regional hub for commodity trading in West Africa.

Expectations
The Deputy Minister urged the board to work towards expanding the range of commodities traded on the exchange, strengthening the GCX's role in directly linking agricultural producers with both local and global buyers. Nana Boadi Amponim Obadade III, Board Chairperson, assured stakeholders that the board will prioritize improving the GCX's operations and impact, positioning it as a critical player in Ghana's agricultural and commodities market.

Impact on Ghana's Agricultural Sector
The GCX plays a crucial role in supporting government initiatives such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture's "Planting for Food and Jobs" and the "One District One Warehouse" initiative. By providing a platform for farmers to sell their products at fair and competitive prices, the GCX is expected to improve the livelihoods of farmers and contribute to the growth of Ghana's agricultural sector.
