Africa World Airlines Launches Accra-Ouagadougou Route

Accra, Ghana - 2 July, 2025 - Africa World Airlines (AWA) has launched a new direct flight route between Accra, Ghana, and Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.

The inaugural flight marks a significant step in AWA's expansion into the Sahel region and underscores the airline's commitment to enhancing intra-African connectivity.

The new route is expected to promote regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and strengthen integration across the continent.

At a brief ceremony in Accra, AWA's founder, Togbe Afede XIV, emphasized the airline's dedication to safety, reliability, and service.

"We want to offer our friends from Burkina Faso the best service possible," he said. "Hopefully, through them, we'll link all of the Sahel to the rest of Africa."

“Hopefully, through them, we’ll link all of the Sahel to the rest of Africa, in line with President John Mahama’s vision of bringing Burkina Faso and Niger back into the fold.”

Togbe Afede XIV also addressed concerns about rising airfares, citing the challenges of the aviation industry.

“I know that our passengers are concerned about ticket prices. We all need to understand that aviation is a very difficult business—capital intensive, with very small margins. Passengers demand the best of services, and we strive to provide the best value for money as we work to integrate the continent,” he explained.

“Yes, prices will go down, but it takes time. Many of our costs were based on the old exchange rate, and we continue to meet obligations priced at those earlier levels. But I want to assure our customers that AWA is committed to value, service, and most importantly—safety,” he emphasized.

The airline plans to operate three flights a week, with plans to improve across the region. This new route makes AWA one of the few carriers offering regular commercial flights between Ghana and Burkina Faso, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism, and diplomatic engagement between West African nations.

Togbe Afede XIV called for support from industry partners, customers, and stakeholders to help AWA achieve its vision of connecting Ghana and Africa to the rest of the world.

He assured customers that the airline is committed to value, service, and safety.
