President Mahama Launches Code of Conduct for Appointees, Vows Zero Tolerance for Breaches

Accra Ghana - 05 May, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has launched a new Code of Conduct, warning public officials that breaches will be met with severe penalties, regardless of their position or influence.
The code, launched on Monday, May 5, sets clear ethical boundaries for appointees, prohibiting practices such as awarding government contracts to themselves, family members, or close associates, which President Mahama described as a betrayal of public trust. Using insider knowledge for personal benefit is also strictly forbidden.
President Mahama warned that his administration will not tolerate any breaches of the Code, emphasizing that sanctions for non-compliance will be severe and non-negotiable. "Coding in state companies that deal with government or with your ministries, using insider knowledge for personal benefit, awarding contracts that are connected to yourselves or your close family," he cautioned, "will be met with disciplinary action."
The President stressed the importance of full transparency and disclosure from all appointees, requiring them to submit official declarations of any potential conflicts of interest. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action, including possible reprimands, suspensions, or dismissals.
“If you are a dormant partner in any business engaging with any business even outside your ministry, you must disclose it in writing to this office.
“Not through a telephone call, not through a relative, but you must submit an official declaration. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action,” he warned.
The new Code of Conduct is part of President Mahama's broader efforts to improve accountability and integrity in public service institutions. By setting clear expectations and consequences for non-compliance, the administration aims to restore public trust and promote ethical governance.
