Police Vehicles Damaged, Officers Hurt as Kukurantumi Youth Demand Justice

Eastern Region,Ghana - Two police officers were injured, and police vehicles were damaged in a violent clash between the youth of Kukurantumi and the police on Sunday, September 21, 2025. The unrest began after a suspect, identified as Bright, died while in police custody. The youth accused a police officer, Kumador, of beating Bright during an arrest after finding substances suspected to be Indian hemp on him.

The situation escalated when reinforcement teams from the Eastern Regional Police Counter Terrorism Unit were deployed to support colleagues from the Akyem Tafo Division. The teams were met with hostility from residents who threw stones at them, damaging two police vehicles - a Toyota Tundra with registration number GP 4004 and the official Toyota Hilux of the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander. Both vehicles had their windshields smashed.

Two police officers sustained eye injuries during the attack and were rushed to the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi for treatment. They received medical care and were later discharged. Reports indicate that officers on duty fled the station during the attack as the youth demanded answers for Bright's death.

The youth's actions were reportedly driven by a demand for justice, with one anonymous youth stating that the incident was fueled by frustration over Bright's death. The situation remains volatile, with authorities working to restore calm and investigate the circumstances surrounding Bright's death.
