Over 822,000 Ghana Cards Remain Uncollected - NIA
Accra, Ghana - 19 June, 2025 - Ghana's National Identification Authority has revealed a significant backlog of uncollected Ghana Cards, with over 822,000 cards awaiting pickup nationwide. Despite registering over 18 million Ghanaians for the national identification card, many have failed to collect their cards, prompting the NIA to issue an urgent appeal.
Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, expressed concern over the large number of unclaimed cards during a press briefing in Accra.
He emphasized the importance of the Ghana Card as a vital identification document, urging registered individuals to visit their collection centers to retrieve their cards without delay.
The NIA has been working to address the backlog, having received 700,000 blank cards in February to print pending records, including first issuance, card replacement, and updates of personal information. However, the authority notes that some cards remain uncollected due to various reasons, including duplicate registrations and failure to update contact information.
“Out of the 18 million plus registrations that we have done, we have 822,440 uncollected cards. Cards that have been printed, but the applicants have yet to pick them up. I am appealing to Ghanaians that if you have registered, and you have yet to pick up your card from our various offices across the country, do not hesitate to go there,” he said.
In response to the issue, the NIA plans to conduct an internal audit to determine the reasons behind the uncollected cards and develop an efficient system to distribute the cards for their intended use.
