OSP Calls for Independent Audit Committee to Regulate Party Finances to Strengthen Electoral Integrity
Accra, Ghana - 28 June, 2025 - Ghana's Office of the Special Prosecutor has proposed the establishment of an independent committee to oversee political party financing.
According to Samuel Appiah Darko, Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the current system lacks transparency and accountability.
Darko's proposal, made at a conference organized by Transparency International Ghana, suggests that the Electoral Commission's dual role as regulator and referee undermines public trust.
He recommended creating an independent audit committee, similar to Norway's model, to oversee party financing.
“Ghana should explore the creation of an independent political audit committee, similar to what exists in Norway,” he noted.
Darko proposed that the committee should comprise of representatives from the Audit Service, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the judiciary, headed by a judge.
This move, he noted, aims to reduce the cost of running for office and prevent the growing influence of money in politics.
“This body would operate separately from the election organisers and could include representatives from the Audit Service, the OSP, and the judiciary, headed by a judge. It would leverage existing expertise and infrastructure, and operate with a dedicated budget, rather than functioning as a separate office.”
