NPP Presses EC to Resume Re-collation of Disputed Parliamentary Seats
Ghana's main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to resume the recount of votes in several constituencies, following disagreements over the process ¹.
The NPP claims its own tally shows the party won several key seats, including Dome-Kwabenya, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, Techiman South, Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Aowin, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Okaikwei Central seats.
However, the EC only officially declared the NPP winners in three constituencies: Suhum, Fanteakwa North, and Akwatia.
The EC suspended the recount on Friday, December 13, after a court injunction was filed by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). The NPP is now calling on the EC to resume the process, ensuring a peaceful and transparent outcome.
Former NPP Chairman Peter Mac Manu emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful completion of the recount at a press conference on Monday Dec 16. He also urged the NDC to caution its supporters, expressing confidence that the NPP's parliamentary candidates won the disputed seats.
“It is our expectation that the EC will resume the collation immediately, and we implore the National Election Security Taskforce to provide adequate security to facilitate peaceful collation in a serene environment.
“We are also calling on the NDC to caution its supporters. We are very certain that our Parliamentary candidates in those constituencies won the election,'' he stated.
