NDC sets 6 conditions before signing peace pact
The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has outlined six conditions that the party believes must be addressed before signing the Peace Pact proposed by the National Peace Council ahead of the general elections.
Mr. Nketia questioned the efficiency of previous Peace Pacts, pointing out that they had not delivered their desired goals, particularly during the 2020 elections, when eight NDC members were purportedly killed by national security personnel without accountability.
He explained the specific conditions for the NDC's participation in the Peace Pact during a meeting with the National Peace Council on August 20, 2024 at the NDC headquarters.
According to him, the NDC demands that the recommendations of the investigation into the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election be completely executed.
They also want individuals involved in election-related violence in the previous election to be prosecuted, emphasizing the significance of justice and prevention.
Again, the party is demanding accountability for errors in ballot paper printing and are insisting on tangible actions to prevent similar issues from occurring again.
They are also calling for a comprehensive inquiry into the missing IT equipment from the Electoral Commission's (EC) storage, expreasing concerns over the integrity of the EC's systems and the potential bias of its employees.
Furthermore, the NDC urges the President to publicly pledge to respect the outcome of the 2024 elections.
Finally, the party insists that the Peace Pact be signed by key authorities such as the Inspector General of Police, Chief Justice, Attorney-General, and National Security Coordinator before they contemplate signing it themselves.
