NPP Must Not Rush to Elect a Presidential Candidate Without Internal Reflections - Nyaho-Tamakloe

Accra, Ghana - 21 June, 2025 - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing internal criticism over its decision to elect a presidential candidate before reorganizing its internal structures. Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the party, has described the move as unconstitutional and strategically flawed.

According to Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, the party's decision to proceed with the selection of a flagbearer ahead of electing new national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives contradicts the laid-down processes outlined in the NPP's constitution.

He cautioned that disregarding the party's own rules would indicate poor leadership and internal problems.

“In a party that has just lost a major election, it is critical to conduct a thorough analysis of what went wrong. Rushing to elect a presidential candidate without honest reflection is a mistake,” he said. “This process appears to be skewed in favour of a particular individual, ignoring genuine concerns raised by notable party figures.”

The NPP's recent electoral defeat in the 2024 general elections has sparked calls for introspection and reform within the party. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe believes that rushing to elect a presidential candidate without honest reflection on the party's past mistakes would be a mistake.

He contended that the current leadership, which he blames for the election loss, is not morally equipped to guide the party through this crucial reorganization.

“The leadership that led the party into defeat cannot be trusted to conduct a credible process that aims at returning the party to power in 2028,” he stated. “We need a transparent, inclusive approach that strictly adheres to the party’s constitution if we are serious about rebuilding the NPP.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe's concerns are shared by some other notable party figures, who have raised genuine concerns about the party's direction. However, it appears that the party's current leadership is pushing ahead with its plans, despite the criticism.
