Accra, Ghana - 21 June, 2025 - Ghana's government has made significant strides in its efforts to combat illegal mining, with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) impounding a total of 1,250 excavators at various ports across the country according to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim.

In an interview on the JoyNews’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, she noted that the move is part of a broader strategy to crack down on galamsey, a practice that has been wreaking havoc on the nation's environment and threatening its economic integrity.

"I want to assure Ghanaians that the government, through the IGP (Christian Tetteh Yohuno), who is really now the lead in terms of fighting the galamsey, has impounded 1,250 excavators at our ports," she stated.

According to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim, the police are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the reasons behind the importation of such a large number of heavy-duty machines.

She added that the government is also collaborating with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to track all excavators currently in use across the country, in a bid to identify and regulate those being used for illegal mining activities.
