NPP Heavyweights Suffer Shock Defeats in Parliamentary Elections, KT Hammond, Ursula, Dakoa Newman, and Twum Barimah Among High-Profile Losers

Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reeling from a string of high-profile losses in the 2024 parliamentary elections. The party's heavyweights, including Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and KT Hammond, have fallen to their opponents from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) .

The NDC's resurgence has sent shockwaves through the NPP, with many of its stalwarts struggling to retain their seats. The party's poor showing has sparked concerns about its future prospects and the need for introspection.

Key Upsets

-Ablekuma West: Ursula Owusu-Ekuful lost to Rev. Kweku Addo of the NDC, who secured 31,866 votes.
- Adansi Asokwa: KT Hammond was unseated by Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the NDC, who won with 14,229 votes.
- Ayawaso Central: Henry Quartey lost to Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC, who garnered 29,755 votes.

- Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) received a mere 163 votes. A total of 53,550 votes were cast in the constituency, with 287 deemed invalid.

- Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, lost his seat after receiving 27,888 votes. His opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC, won decisively with 37,473 votes.

- In Dormaa East, Twum Barima, the incumbent MP, secured 12,050 votes but was narrowly defeated by Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who received 12,310 votes.

The NDC's strong performance has created a significant challenge for the NPP, which must now regroup and reassess its strategy. As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Ghana's political landscape has undergone a significant shift.
