'No-Textbook Phenomenon in Schools Will End This Year' - President Mahama

Tamale, Northern Region, Ghana - 23 March, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at his predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for neglecting to provide textbooks to students despite introducing a new curriculum.

Mahama made the remarks during his 'thank you' tour in Tamale on Saturday, March 22, where he also announced a significant allocation of GHC564.6 million for textbooks to enhance learning for basic school children.

According to him, the government's initiative, overseen by Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, prioritizes local printing of textbooks to boost Ghana's economy.

Mahama emphasized that the lack of textbooks under the previous administration will be addressed this year, ensuring that students receive the necessary resources for quality education.

“If you will recall, the previous administration changed the curriculum, and, yet, refused to provide textbooks for our basic school students.

“This no-textbook phenomenon will end this year. Your own son, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu [Education Minister] is responsible for implementing this. And he has assured us that these textbooks are going to be printed by Ghanaian printers so that the money stays here in Ghana,” he stated.

He added that his administration has expanded the school feeding program, increasing funding to provide better meals for students. In a bid to support female students' education, resources have also been allocated to provide free sanitary pads, he noted.

“We have allocated resources to provide free sanitary pads for our female students.”
