No Need to Privatise ECG - PUWU

Accra, Ghana - 03 May, 2025 - Ghana's Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has hailed President John Dramani Mahama's commitment to keep the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in public hands, citing the company's existing technical capabilities as evidence that privatisation is not needed.
Speaking after the President's assurance on May Day, in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, May 2, PUWU General Secretary Timothy Nyame expressed the union's appreciation for the commitment, but emphasized that strong leadership is now crucial to turning around ECG's fortunes.
“They should appoint competent leaders who can be able to crack the whip so that the sector will remain under the government. The workers of ECG whom they have employed and trained have the capabilities to turn around the fortunes of this sector, provided there’s a will from the presidency,” Nyame said.
Nyame highlighted that the union has submitted proposals to the government to address the company's challenges, stressing the need for competent and accountable leadership to oversee the sector. The union's stance is consistent with its long-standing opposition to privatizing ECG, driven by a desire to protect workers and the public interest. With the President's assurance, PUWU is now urging the government to appoint leaders who can effectively manage ECG and improve its performance.
“The union has not been quiet, we’ve been trying to find out how best we can turn around the fortunes. We’re also Ghanaians, and we’re thinking in the best interest of the country. So, need not put this entity in the hands of a private entity before they can perform,” he stressed.
