No More Paying for Hospital Toilets - Ghana Health Service

Accra, Ghana - 20 April, 2025 -

The Ghana Health Service has taken a firm stance against hospitals and clinics charging patients and visitors for using washrooms, describing the practice as "exploitative and inappropriate". In a strongly-worded directive, the GHS has ordered all its facilities to immediately stop collecting fees for washroom use, warning that failure to comply will attract sanctions for facility heads.

The move comes after reports emerged of some healthcare facilities charging between 50 pesewas and GH¢2 for using washrooms. The GHS has emphasized the importance of maintaining clean and accessible washrooms to prevent infections and improve patient care.

Acting Director-General Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea signed the directive, which instructs Regional Directors to ensure strict compliance. The GHS has highlighted the need to uphold patient dignity and improve public health standards, stating that washrooms must be kept clean and comfortable at all times.
