Nestle Fires Boss After Romantic Relationship with Employee
Nestle has fired its CEO, Laurent Freixe, after just one year in the job due to an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate. The Swiss food giant confirmed that Freixe was dismissed with immediate effect following an investigation led by Nestle's chair, Paul Bulcke, and lead independent director, Pablo Isla, with the support of independent outside counsel.
The investigation was triggered by a report made through Nestle's whistleblowing channel, which raised concerns about Freixe's relationship with an employee who is not on the executive board. Although an initial internal investigation found the claims to be unsubstantiated, a subsequent external investigation upheld the allegations, leading to Freixe's dismissal.
Nestle chair Paul Bulcke stated, "This was a necessary decision. Nestlé's values and governance are strong foundations of our company." The company emphasized that it acted in line with best practice corporate governance, taking allegations and investigations seriously. Freixe will not receive an exit package, despite nearly 40 years of service to the company.
This isn't the first time a CEO has been fired over a personal relationship. Other notable cases include:
- BP's Bernard Looney: Quit after admitting to not being fully transparent about his personal relationships.
- McDonald's Steve Easterbrook: Fired in 2019 after a consensual relationship with an employee was discovered, followed by revelations of three additional relationships with staff members. Easterbrook initially received a $105 million severance package, which he later returned, and was fined $400,000 by the US financial watchdog in 2023.
