NDC to Rename Headquarters "Jerry Rawlings House" in Tribute to Late Founder

Lower Manya Krobo, Eastern Region, Ghana - 05 June, 2025 - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to further cement the legacy of its late founder, Jerry John Rawlings, with a series of new proposals aimed at honouring his memory and solidifying the party's historical roots. In a significant move, the party's Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has adopted proposals to rename its national headquarters "Jerry Rawlings House," officially recognize June 22 - Rawlings' birthday - as a significant day in the party's calendar, and declare June as "NDC Month." These proposals are now pending approval by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC).

The announcement was made by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, during the party's commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the June 4 uprising at Agormanya Lasi Park in the Eastern Region.

The June 4 uprising, led by Rawlings in 1979, remains a pivotal moment in Ghana's political history and the NDC's evolution. The party continues to commemorate the event annually, underscoring its commitment to accountability and probity. The proposed measures aim to further cement Rawlings' legacy within the party's identity.

Nketiah emphasized the importance of paying tribute to Rawlings' legacy, citing the practice of naming party headquarters after founders as a global norm.

“We would, as a party, amend our constitution to include the birthday of our founding father as one of the significant days for the party. That is June 22. Beyond that, moves are underway to rename the party headquarters as Jerry Rawlings’ house because this is a practice all over the world.

“Party headquarters are named after the founders of those parties, and Ghana cannot be an exception. So we will begin all the processes that are necessary to secure all the approvals within the party, so that the national headquarters becomes Rawlings House,” he said

In addition to the proposals, Nketiah expressed concerns about the deterioration of Revolutionary Square in front of the Jubilee House, calling for the establishment of a planning committee to advise on measures to revive the Square.

He emphasized the importance of preserving historical sites and educating the youth about Ghana's history.

“Please establish a committee, a planning committee, to advise as to how we can get the Revolutionary Square back to its original status. If you need to contact museums and the monument board, whatever you need to pave the way for us to rehabilitate the Revolutionary Square, it has to be done. It doesn’t mean it is a monument, and it teaches our youth a lesson,” he added.
