Ahiafor is 'shielding' Ministerial Nominees - Minority
Bernard Ahiafor is th Chairman of the Appointments Committee

Accra, Ghana - 16 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's opposition lawmakers have accused the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, of interfering with the vetting process of ministerial nominees.

The Minority in Parliament alleges that Mr Ahiafor's conduct was overly protective of the nominees and biased towards the ruling party.

“His actions appeared to shield the nominees and suppress legitimate questions from committee members, effectively fast-tracking the vetting process in a manner that raises serious concerns,” Dr Gideon Boako, MP for Tano North, told journalists in Accra on Wednesday.

The opposition lawmakers say Mr Ahiafor's actions undermined their ability to scrutinise the nominees thoroughly.

“The Majority members on the committee, led by Ahiafor, must work collaboratively to fulfil the committee’s mandate. If such behaviour persists, it risks enabling unqualified individuals to occupy critical positions, which would be detrimental to our democracy,” Boako cautioned.

The Appointments Committee is a parliamentary body tasked with ensuring that ministerial appointees are suitable for their roles.

The Minority has warned that Mr Ahiafor's approach could compromise the committee's oversight role and damage public trust in the democratic process.
