NDC Tamale Central Primary Heats Up as 16 Aspirants Vie for Vacant Seat

Tamale ,Ghana,agust 22,2025 - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Tamale Central constituency has attracted significant interest, with 16 individuals, including two women, picking up nomination forms to contest the seat left vacant by the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The aspirants include prominent figures such as Professor Alidu Seidu, former Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana ,Hanan Gundaado, former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale ,Halid Abdul-Rauf, former Northern Regional Treasurer of the NDC ,Seidu Fitter, Principal Research Assistant at the University for Development Studies (UDS) and aide to Minister Haruna Iddrisu ,Hajia Shamima Yakubu, current Northern Regional Treasurer of the NDC and Hajia Alimatu Issahaku.

The seat fell vacant after the tragic death of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025 in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC has set the cost of a nomination form at GH¢5,000, payable in cash upon collection, while the filing fee stands at GH¢40,000. However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities will benefit from a 50% discount on the filing fee.

The Electoral Commission has planned to run the by-election on September 30, 2025, to find a replacement for the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed. In a statement, the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, urged aspirants and stakeholders to conduct themselves with restraint and respect during the process.
